Blood in Motion
Cardiovascular diseases, disorders, and events, such as coronary artery disease, aneurysms, stroke, and thrombosis occur at specific regions in the circulation and may lead to significant local blood flow alterations. Moreover, hemodynamic factors are believed to play an important role in the development of these diseases.
Aim in the track ‘Blood in Motion’ is to develop mathematical models that simulate blood flow in specific arteries in order to obtain insight into the occurrence of vascular diseases and to assist in patient specific intervention planning (e.g. angioplasty, valve replacement and vascular access surgery). As every artery is part of the complete circulation, it can not be modelled as a simple bounded entity. That is why special attention is paid to applying proper boundary conditions depending on pulse wave propagation and reflection in the arterial tree.
The mathematical models are verified using in vitro set-ups and are validated in clinical trials in collaboration with our clinical partners. To make the models patient specific and implement them in current clinical workflows, advanced global sensitivity and uncertainty analysis methods are developed and applied.
