Lustrum 55 years

Time for celebrations!

This year the Department of the Built Environment celebrates its 55 years lustrum. Please find below the lustrum events for 2022.

Wind tunnel

We welcome you at the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel of the Department of the Built Environment at TU/e. With its 27 m long test section it is one of the longest wind tunnels in the world. With a maximum wind speed of 30 m/s we conduct work on many topics described as Wind Engineering.
For the LUSTRUM we will open our doors to share interesting information about our work specifically related to Wind Energy.

CASA Vertigo

Between 1964 and 1990, the Stichting Architecten Research (Foundation for Architectural Research, or SAR) led by John Habraken—the first dean of the TU/e’s Department of the Built environment—proposed a radical new way of thinking about mass housing. It sought to define and decouple two key components of buildings: supports and infill. Provided with a solid, industrially produced housing construction, individual residents would have the freedom to build, shape and adapt their own dwellings within this structure.

This exhibition will survey both the context and the outputs of the SAR, presenting a selection of drawings, models, project photos, and texts that tell the story of this bold experiment to reshape housing production. The material on view will explore how the idea took root first in the Netherlands and then internationally, and it will examine the role of both pedagogy and practice in the idea’s development. Finally, the exhibition will propose some speculative futures for the idea today, bringing in questions of contemporary importance like circularity, adaptive reuse, and participation before examining their relevance to current debates around mass housing.

From June 13 to July 29, 2022 in Plaza Vertigo.

Acoustics

Acoustics has been an important topic ever since the department of the Built Environment started. And the past year the acoustic laboratory celebrated its 40th birthday! Research by the TU/e group “Building Acoustics” and the company “Level Acoustics & Vibration” contributes to knowledge and developments on new building methods, building materials, health issues, experimental and computational methods, indoors and outdoors. Feel free to walk in and meet the acousticians. You will find them in the so-called ECHO building on the other side of the campus! Are check their websites:
