Photonic Integrated Circuits

A significant increase in the number of fabricated application specific photonic integrated circuits (ASPICs) has resulted from free access to the experimental foundry runs organized on the foundry platforms of Oclaro and Fraunhofer HHI in the FP7 projects EuroPIC and PARADIGM, partially through open calls. Three foundries now provide access to their generic process via semi-commercial foundry runs through the JePPIX platform. They are Oclaro, Fraunhofer HHI and SMARTPhotonics, a COBRA spinoff that provides access to the COBRA process for fast prototyping. This gives a further boost to the number of R&D prototypes and the range and diversity of applications.
