COBRA COLLOQUIUM: Friday January 11, 2013 at 15:00 – 16:00 in the Film Theater of Grand Café and Film house De Zwarte Doos
Speaker: Prof. dr. ir. Roel Baets
Title: Nonlinear Optics in Silicon-on-Insulator waveguides
Abstract: After an introduction on silicon photonics and on third-order nonlinear effects, the nonlinear properties of silicon are discussed. Then progress on nonlinear optics in silicon is reviewed both for telecom and mid IR bands.
Biography: Roel Baets is full professor at GhentUniversity since 1989. He has also held part-time professor functions at TUDelft and at TUEindhoven. He is associated with IMEC. He heads the Photonics Research Group and is director of the Center for Nano- and Biophotonics (NB-Photonics). He has been coordinator of the European Network of Excellence ePIXnet. He has published over 300 journal papers and has been inventor on >20 patents. His research focuses on silicon photonics and its applications in smart sensors, biomedical instrumentation and spectroscopy. Roel Baets holds an Advanced ERC Grant. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
After the colloquium (around 16:00) we organize a mini-colloquium in which three COBRA researchers, one from each of the three COBRA groups, will give a short presentation about his or her work.
For the Photonic Integration Group:
Speaker: Antonio Corradi Title: Dual wavelength lasers
For the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics Group:
Speaker: Chaoyuan Jin Title: Remote control of the spontaneous emission using coupled photonic crystal cavities
For the Electro Optical Communication Group:
Speaker: Roy van Uden Title: Digital signal processing for spatial division multiplexing
The audience is invited to an informal gathering following the colloquium in the lounge of Grand Café and Film house De Zwarte Doos.
The next COBRA Colloquium will take place on Friday, Febuary 8, 2012
Location: TU/e, the Film Theater of Grand Café and Film house De Zwarte Doos
Time: 15:00 hours
