Title: Silicon-organic hybrid integration, photonic wire bonding and frequency combs: Technologies for Tbit/s interconnects
Abstract: Data processing and storage are migrating from local computers to a global cloud of data centers. The performance of these facilities, however, is currently limited by the transmission capacity of the underlying communication networks. Photonic interconnects capable of handling multi-Tbit/s data streams are key to overcome these limitations. We have recently demonstrated transmission of 32.5 Tbit/s encoded on a single mode-locked laser source using advanced modulation formats and all-optical fast Fourier transform (FFT) processing. The associated technical complexity of such systems, however, is still prohibitive for real-world applications.
In this talk, we give an overview on our current research towards chip-scale Tbit/s transceivers and the underlying technologies. Silicon-organic hybrid integration combines the advantages of conventional silicon photonics with the wealth of optical functionalities that can be obtained from organic materials, thereby overcoming shortcomings of the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material system. Chip-scale frequency combs can be realized by exploiting nonlinear interaction in high-Q resonators and lend themselves as optical sources for highly scalable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems. Photonic wire bonding enables automated fabrication of single-mode chip-to-chip interconnects and enables novel concepts of photonic multi-chip systems. We will give an overview on our research in these technologies and discuss their potential application in high-speed optical interconnects.
Biography: Christian Koos is a professor at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) since 2010. Within KIT, he is currently leading research groups at the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Electronics (IPQ) and the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT). His research comprises nanophotonic devices and integrated photonic systems along with the corresponding applications in optical communications and optical metrology. Christian Koos received the Dipl.-Ing. (M.Tech.) and the Dr.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Karlsruhe, in 2002 and 2007, respectively. From 2007 to 2008, he carried out post-doctoral research at the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Electronics, University of Karlsruhe, where he pioneered nanophotonic silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) devices. From 2008 to 2010, he was leading the technology radars "Nanotools and Nanometrology" and “Metrology” within the Corporate Research and Technology department of Carl Zeiss AG, Germany. Christian Koos has recently been awarded the Alfried Krupp Prize for Young University Teachers, one of the most highly endowed prizes for young researchers in the field of natural science and engineering at German universities.
After the colloquium (around 16:00) we organize a mini-colloquium in which three COBRA researchers, one from each of the three COBRA groups, will give a short presentation about his or her work.
