Erik van der Vleuten (1968) is Professor of History of Technology at the TU/e School of Innovation Sciences. He studies the historical co-construction of infrastructure, societal, and environmental changes. Recent books include Engineering the Future, Understanding the Past: A Social History of Technology (2017); Europe’s Infrastructure Transition:Economy, War, Nature (2015); and  The Making of Europe’s Critical Infrastructure: Common Connections and Shared Vulnerabilities (2013).

Erik is scientific director of the Foundation for the History of Technology SHT, co-directs the NW Posthumus globalisation network, and in 2013-2015 chaired the pan-European research network Tensions of Europe.

He also coordinates the TUE team in the Horizon2020 program History of Nuclear Energy in Society HoNESt.

Currently, Erik is setting up a large research program on 'Technology and the Making of Societal Crises/ Challenges (1850-Today)', as a new SHT and Tensions of Europe flagship project. See also: Challenging Prometheus: a history of technology for an age of grand challenges (2017).
