Virgil Rerimassie (1986) is external PhD student within the Technology, Innovation and Society group at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.
Virgil holds Master degrees in Constitutional Law, as well as in Science and Technology Studies, both from Maastricht University. Currently, he works as a policy advisor on biotechnology at the directorate-general Environment and International Affairs of the ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Prior to this position, Virgil worked at the Technology Assessment division of the Rathenau Instituut for six years. He was concerned with examining the ethical, legal and societal implications of emerging technologies, such as synthetic biology and nanotechnology and stimulating debate hereon.
His PhD research deals with ‘early engagement’ with emerging technologies, and reflects on how the Rathenau Instituut put this concept in practice with regard to synthetic biology. He is being supervised by prof. dr. Geert Verbong and dr. Rinie van Est, his former research coordinator at the Rathenau Instituut.
