About Human-Technology Interaction

The Human-Technology Interaction group is an active and multidisciplinary group with a strong focus on the Human as the center of technological development.

Our mission is to perform fundamental research on human-technology interaction, particularly with respect to communication and information and in regard to the promotion of more sustainable performance of individuals. With a solid psychological foundation and located and connected with the technical departments at Eindhoven University of Technology, the HTI group is at the cutting edge of user-system interaction research.

Innovation is one of the fundamental factors affecting the economic performance of firms, regions and countries, and social welfare and the quality of life at large. With the rapid development of modern technology and the many options it has to offer, it becomes more and more important to design technical products, systems, and environments in such a way that they are useful, useable, enjoyable, and accessible to their potential users. It is essential that, besides development of technology itself, knowledge is gained about the way users interact with modern technology. The field of user-system interaction is becoming recognized worldwide as an important research area, also at the TU/e. This interdisciplinary field, in which several TU/e departments are involved in one way or another, is the specific research domain of the Human-Technology Interaction group.

We are part of the school of Innovation Sciences at the department of IE&IS at Eindhoven University of Technology, and are part of the ECIS school of Innovation Sciences. We are responsible for the Master's Program Human- Technology Interaction and the Minor Human Technology Interaction within the school of Innovation Sciences.

Multidisciplinary
The HTI group at Eindhoven University of Technology has the unique strength of bringing together classical human factor approaches in perception and cognitive psychology with environmental, social and neuropsychology expertise. This combination of expertise areas enables the group to study rapidly emerging topics in human-technology interaction such as those related to the user experience in advanced media environments, for example

  • ambient intelligence (e.g. natural interaction with computers), mobile media, localization media (e.g. GPS),
  • connected entertainment (e.g. in digital gaming);
  • persuasive technology (e.g smart agents that help to keep healthy or to save energy);
  • effects of light and lighting on human performance and mood (e.g. at home or in offices);
  • the adoption of new, complex technology like nuclear fusion or hydrogen power;
  • the health effects of natural experiences in a virtual environment on restoration from urban stress or recovery after medical treatment;
  • social life on the internet in social communities or e-commerce.
