Biografie

Research profile

Maurice Heemels is a Full professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and Chair of Hybrid and Networked Systems. His current research interests include cyber-physical, hybrid and non-smooth dynamical systems, networked control systems, event-triggered control, and constrained systems including model predictive control. His research is oriented towards general system and control theory with an emphasis on the study of hybrid systems that exhibit both discrete and continuous dynamics. In particular, he focuses on shaping the foundations of developing multi-disciplinary design techniques, across a number of areas.  

Cyber-physical systems bridge ‘cyber’ (computation, communication and control) elements and physical processes (heating, cooling, motion, vibration...) in next generation high-tech professional systems for applications such as medical imaging, lithography, smart grids and  electron microscopy. Resource-aware control strategies move away from time-triggered controller operation, increasing data and power efficiency.  (Wireless) networked control systems looks at maximizing efficiently connecting sensors, controllers, actuators and more over shared media. Switching dynamics overcomes limitations inherent to Bode's gain-phase relationship to meet increasing throughput and accuracy demands. Model Predictive Control / Constrained Systems looks into solving (at each sampling instant) a finite horizon open-loop optimal control problem to produce a control action.

Academic background

Maurice Heemels received his MSc and PhD in mathematics from TU/e in 1995 and 1999, respectively (both summa cum laude, top 5% of students). From 2000 to 2004 he worked at the TU/e Electrical Engineering Department as an Assistant Professor and from 2004 to 2006 at the Embedded Systems Institute (ESI) as a Research Fellow. He joined the department of Mechanical Engineering in 2006.  Maurice has held visiting research positions at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland (and the University of California at Santa Barbara, California, USA. He also worked also at the Research & Development laboratory of Océ in Venlo, The Netherlands.  

Mauruce is an Associate Editor for the journals Automatica and Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems. He is on the editorial board of Annual Reviews in Control and has acted as guest editor of Event-based Distributed Signal Processing and Control in Sensor Networks for IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics and a special issue of the Elsevier journal Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems. Maarten’s activities as IPC chair include the IFAC Technical Committee 1.5 on Networked Systems (2017-2020 triennium), IFAC Conference on Analysis and Design of Hybrid Systems (ADHS, 2018), IFAC Workshop on Distributed Estimation and Control in Networked Systems (NecSys, 2013) and IPC co-chair of European Control Conference 2013 (ECC 2013).
