This research focuses on closed-loop combustion control for modern diesel engines. A control methodology is developed for high EGR diesel combustion concepts with advanced multi-pulse fuelling strategies and Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) systems.

Closed-loop in-cycle combustion control is a crucial enabler for the next generation, low CO2 combustion concepts such as Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) and Partially Pre-mixed Combustion (PPC). Current research is mainly limited to studies that focus on combustion phasing control by single injection strategies only. My research focuses on performance and control optimization, seeking for a thorough understanding (and models) of the relation between in-cycle conditions and control actions. A control methodology is developed for high EGR diesel combustion concepts with advanced multi-pulse fuelling strategies and Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) systems.
