Integrated chassis control using steer-by-wire and semi-active suspension

In this project the goal is to develop a controller for by-wire features in the vehicle that improves the vehicle behavior in both handling and comfort. For this a test vehicle is available. Below the two techniques are explained.

Steer-by-wire

In steer-by-wire the physical connection between the steering wheel and front wheels is removed and replaced by a computer controlled system. Benefits of this strategy include increased safety in limit handling situations. Research has taken place using a model of a large saloon car fitted with a steer-by-wire system. From this it becomes clear that a vehicle can respond beyond human capabilities and that safety can be enhanced by incorporating steer-by-wire. From experiments it became clear that there is a huge diversity in human preference concerning the steering feel.

Semi-active suspension

A high bandwidth semi-active suspension offers online adjustability of the suspension at limited energy consumption compared to a fully active suspension system. The research is focused on finding a control strategy that optimizes the comfort of a vehicle. First an optimal control strategy (MPC) is defined using a model of the car. From this, new controllers are developed that approximate this optimal controller (FWADD). See attached figure for a comparison.
