Structure tuning for enhanced performance of polyolefins

Polymer products with complex 3-dimensional shapes are often produced by injection molding. The conditions during this process, e.g. pressure, shear and cooling rate are known to be of great importance for the structure development upon solidification, especially in case of semi-crystalline polymers. Due to the nature of polymeric materials the structure evolves further in time, even after solidification. The intrinsic mechanical properties, as well as the long term properties, are directly related to the morphology and the crystallographic structures resulting from processing.

In this project a relation between the processing conditions and the mechanical properties will be established, which enables the possibility to predict mechanical properties directly from the processing conditions. An intermediate step that has to be taken is the prediction of polymorphism and morphology.
