Helix

Opening hours: Mon-Fri 7:00-18:00

Building period: 1993 - 1997 (Design: OD205/studio M10, Martien Jansen)

The Helix building has an H-shaped floor plan and stands out as a result of its carefully detailed façades. The name refers to the structure of DNA, the double helix. The helix shape, two intertwined strands, returns in the building design in the form of four high atriums revolving around a central core. In these atriums there are meeting halls and conference rooms. The department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry is accommodated in this building and in Matrix. It conducts groundbreaking research in the field of polymers (synthetic compounds) and other materials. The department has extensive laboratory facilities, divided over some 12,000 m2.

In 2014 Helix was the first TU/e building to receive an energy-saving treatment, within the context of ‘entrepreneurial cooperation’ of TU/e with five technical partners. The saving corresponds to a 20% reduction of CO2 emissions by Helix. Helix is the building with the highest energy costs, due to the extensive air treatment in the chemistry labs.
