MSc student Wies Ruyters: 'If you’re prepared to put in the work, calculus can hardly go wrong'

August 3, 2021

In new Dutch podcast series ‘From student to engineer’ TU/e students tell about their experiences studying at a university of technology.

Is mathematics at a technological university really that different than mathematics in high school? In the Dutch podcast series 'From student to engineer' our students Wies and Alexandra tell you all about it. They share their own experiences and give useful tips.

At TU/e, mathematics is called ‘calculus’. It’s a basic course every student must take, regardless which major you choose. “But the set-up is completely different from high school”, according to Wies. “There are interactive lectures, guided self-study classes, you will work on assignments together with fellow students, prepare for your exams during special workshops. If you do all that, calculus can hardly go wrong.”

Alexandra: “In high-school, mathematics B was not recommended to me right away. But because I liked the topics, I decided to do it anyway and that worked out pretty well. My advice for future students? Follow your instinct. You don’t need a 9 to succeed at TU/e as long as you are interested in the subjects.”
