Empowering students through Data-Driven Learning

Research project "Let the Data Inspire Students" harnesses the power of learning analytics to enhance personalized learning.

Higher education is in a constant search to better support students. With the rise of blended learning - a mix of online and in-person education - students are increasingly required to take charge of their personal learning journey, often facing challenges like self-regulation, motivation, and effective time management. The new research project "Let the Data Inspire Students" aims to help students enhance personalized learning through the use of learning analytics.

Data-driven insights

The project team, led by Uwe Matzat consists of Chris Snijders and Rianne Conijn. "Blended learning offers tremendous flexibility, but it also demands a high level of self-directedness from students," explains Matzat. "Our goal is to leverage data-driven insights to empower students, addressing individual needs and fostering success in this dynamic educational landscape."

The project’s advisory board comprises experts from various disciplines, including Apoorva Sonawane (Mechanical Engineering), Caroline Vonk (4TU.CEE), Ad Kleingeld (TU/e, HPM), and Tom van Woensel (Educational Director IE&IS). The project is embedded in the Dutch 4 TUs Learning Analytics consortium. This diverse collaboration underscores the project's interdisciplinary approach toward educational innovation.

Personalized learning pathways

"Using learning analytics, enables us to develop tailored solutions that resonate with students from different backgrounds," states Chris Snijders. "This project aligns with TU/e's commitment to personalized learning pathways and innovative educational practices."

The  to-be-developed dashboards will provide students with actionable insights into their learning behaviors. These dashboards, based on solid educational theories and co-designed with students, aim to promote self-regulation, enhance motivation, and offer personalized feedback at scale.

Empower students

"Imagine having real-time feedback on your learning patterns and performance," remarks Rianne Conijn. "These dashboards will empower students to make informed decisions and optimize their learning strategies."
