KU Leuven, RWTH Aachen and TU Eindhoven signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Monday to start broad cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The aim is to take AI research and education in the three countries but also in a European context to the next level. The focus is on AI for high-tech systems, the domain in which the industry in the Eindhoven-Leuven-Aachen triangle excels.

The envisaged cooperation covers both research and education. The parties want to set up joint research projects and apply for grants. The three universities will also work on exchanges of students and scientists, of knowledge, experiences and teaching materials. In addition, they will look into joint PhD and postdoc programmes. It is also planned to jointly organise events such as colloquia, workshops and hackathons.

Rector Magnificus Silvia Lenaerts, who signed the agreement on behalf of TU/e at the Aachen AI Week: "With the lightning-fast developments in the field of AI, it is very important to be able to work together as three top European players and learn from each other. This will not only benefit students, scientists and companies, but it will also strengthen Europe's position in the field of AI."

EAISI brings together AI researchers

To emphasize the great importance of research in artificial intelligence, TU/e established the Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute (EAISI) in 2019. Within EAISI, all AI activities at TU/e converge: top researchers from various Deparments and research groups collaborate here to create exciting new AI applications that have a direct impact on the world around us. This happens in close cooperation with students and industry representatives.
