Student teams present the City of 1.5 degrees
How can the new Pampus-district in Almere become a model to support our climate goals?
On 12 April student teams from the Alliance of Eindhoven University of Technology, the University of Utrecht and Wageningen University & Research, will present their ideas to fellow students, teachers, clients from Almere, and others involved in educational innovation.
‘The city of 1.5 degrees’ is a challenge-based learning (CBL) course in which multidisciplinary student teams seek solutions for a societal challenge. This year they have been working on ideas for Pampus, a new city district in Almere. The solutions the teams come up with may be useful to support future cities to meet the climate goals of the Netherlands or deal with the consequences of climate change, says Arjan Kirkels, project leader of the CBL course.
The TIS group has been organizing this CBL course for the Alliance for the second year now. Kirkels is proud of the success: “It helps students to engage with sustainability and think in solutions. The CBL approach in the Alliance context also really helps to stimulate transdisciplinary cooperation and integral approaches. The topics range from urban mobility to city planning and urban food production to reducing flooding risk. We used a very advanced virtual classroom for teaching, which was a unique and very effective way of establishing a link with the students. But I have to admit that organizing the course also has proven to be challenge-based for the teachers, trying to overcome all practical and institutional differences between the three universities involved.”
On 12 April all 7 student teams will present their solutions in Utrecht from 13.30 – 17.00 hrs. If you want to join the presentations you can contact Arjan Kirkels: a.f.kirkels@ tue.nl
