The great value of collaboration with industry

TU/e’s collaboration with industry is highly important in a variety of ways. The most obvious added value of collaboration is in the area of valorization. The Dutch government decided in 2004 that valorisation is the third core task of universities. Valorization means ensuring the utilization of the knowledge generated by the university. But collaboration is also of great value for research and education.

Solutions to societal challenges

By working together, we combine strengths and expertise and have greater power to provide solutions for societal transitions, such as in the areas of healthcare and energy.

Responding to current, relevant issues

Through our close collaboration, we have a better understanding of what is going on in industry, which also allows us to better contribute to solutions. Together, we therefore create new knowledge and technology that has a greater chance of actually reaching the market and benefiting society, through which the societal impact of our research increases.

Innovation in business

Through collaboration, we also contribute to the earning power and innovation of the business community. The contribution that universities make to this is becoming increasingly important as industry increasingly looks to universities for the results of innovative research.

Access to unique expertise and resources

Collaboration is also of great value to academics and students. They gain access to the latest knowledge and expertise from industry and to top research facilities. More resources for research become available and they can work on current, relevant issues.

Higher quality of education

Collaboration leads to greater educational quality for students. They come into contact with relevant internships and issues, receive broader guidance and better connect with the job market.

Collaboration between industry and universities is therefore widely encouraged, not only by the Dutch government but also by the EU. Innovation hubs – places where (international) talent is present and where high-tech companies and educational institutions work together in an innovative ecosystem – have an edge here. These are all reasons for both universities and companies to seek each other out and work together.
