Advancing Circular Interventions in Hospitals to Reduce Healthcare's Ecological Footprint

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) awarded a 5.3 million grant to a research project on creating a more sustainable healthcare sector. The subsidy is part of the Dutch Research Agenda. The project ESCH-R aims to accelerate the adoption of circular interventions in hospitals, with the ultimate goal of reducing the ecological footprint of healthcare.

Healthcare currently contributes 7% to the Netherlands' CO2 emissions, and the ESCH-R project seeks to address this challenge. TU/e researchers Vikrant Sihag, Duygu Keskin, and Myriam Cloodt are part of the research consortium led by Erasmus MC. The interdisciplinary team will focus on the question: How can hospitals transition from single-use medical consumables to embrace circularity?

By collaborating with various societal partners, the research team will develop innovative, circular strategies that are safe, scalable, and environmentally friendly.
Ultimately, the ESCH-R project will contribute to a sustainable and resilient healthcare system, aligning with the government's call for more environmentally conscious healthcare practices.
