TU/e is still among the world’s ten best-performing research universities in terms of research cooperation with industry. Ten to 20 percent of the scientific publications of these ten universities in the period 2006-2008 were the result of partnerships with researchers in industry.

These findings are stated in the University-Industry Research Cooperation (UIRC) Scoreboard 2011, published this week by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University. The centre looked at the world’s 500 largest research universities, and investigated what proportion of their research publications were the result of partnerships with industry, as shown in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science citation index for the period 2006-2008.

For each university the Scoreboard shows the absolute number of co-publications with industry, the proportion of co-publications with industry in the total number of publications by that university, and finally the university’s position in the top 500. The Scoreboard no longer shows the exact positions of universities, but instead gives a range. TU/e is listed in the range 1-10.

Top 10
As well as TU/e and Delft University of Technology, the top 10 also includes two universities in Japan (Tokyo Institute of Technology and Keio University in Tokyo), two in Sweden (University of Gothenburg and  KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm), and one each in Denmark (DTU Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby), Finland (University of Helsinki), Norway (Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim) and the USA (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York).

Number 1 in 2009
In the 2009 edition of the UIRC Scoreboard, the Centre for Science and Technology Studies still published exact scores for each university. In that year TU/e took first place among the world’s 350 largest research universities, with a UIRC score of 11 percent.
 
Numbers of publications
In absolute numbers, 9 of the world’s 500 largest research universities produced more than 1500 co-publications with industry in the period 2006-2008: four in Japan, four in the USA and one in Canada. Twenty-four universities (including Utrecht University) produced between 1001 and 1500 co-publications.
