To complete the mandatory formalities before the start of your contract (or first day in the office), you should arrive in the Netherlands a few days before the start of your contract. The days between arrival and the first day at work are needed to schedule important appointments for you.

Our Staff Immigration Team (SIT) will contact you at short notice. They can assist you with the practical matters mentioned here.

30% Facility

The 30% reimbursement scheme (also known as the 30% facility or the 30% ruling) is a tax benefit for knowledge migrants who come to the Netherlands to take up a specific employment position. If you meet the conditions, your HR Service Officer can help you apply for a tax-free allowance amounting to 30% of the gross salary subject to Dutch wage tax. This allowance is intended to compensate for the extra costs international employees may face when moving to a new country for work. For example, you can use this financial allowance for a Dutch language course. HR can advise you on all benefits and implications if you decide to use the 30% facility.

Finding your way around campus

Within walking distance of the central train and bus station, you'll find our green campus with beautiful architecture, varied workplaces, and loads of facilities to host our vibrant campus community. Signs give directions to the buildings and the nearest parking lots. There are also parking options for cyclists everywhere, either outside or in special bike basements. If you come by car, you can use your campus card to open the barrier. TU/e uses paid parking to reduce car use. Also be sure to sign up for one of our introduction days, as you'll get a tour of our beautiful campus.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are there any cultural norms or etiquette I should be aware of in the workplace?

In the Netherlands, professionalism, respect, and open communication are highly valued. It is customary to address colleagues and superiors by their first names, and punctuality is expected. It is also common to have direct and transparent communication, with an emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. We offer various culture workshops. In consultation with your supervisor, you can participate in our staff learning offerings free of charge.

  • Can I reclaim money for moving and accommodation expenses?

TU/e has a policy for ‘Reimbursement for relocation and accommodation expenses’. Please find more information here. It is critical that you keep your invoices related to your move to the Netherlands for this purpose.

  • What are the working hours and TU/e’s policies on attendance?

The regular working hours for employees at TU/e are from Monday to Friday, generally starting between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM and ending between 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM. However, at TU/e, you have the flexibility to plan your own working hours and to make agreements with your supervisor and team about how you want to organize your (hybrid) work. When arranging for working from home, the type of work and the team's interests are leading. All in consult of course, but quite flexible. Please find more information here

  • What is the preferred language of communication at TU/e? Are there any language training opportunities?

Given the international nature of the university, English is the working language and commonly used. Most employees are fluent in English. Language training opportunities are available to support your language development in both English and Dutch.

Please note that if you participate in the 30% ruling, the Dutch language courses are not compensated by TU/e. The financial benefit of the 30% ruling is intended to compensate for additional costs when moving to a new country for work.

  • What is TU/e’s policy on breaks and lunch hours?

Breaks and lunchtime are generally considered personal time and not counted as work time. Many colleagues bring their own lunch. A Dutch lunch is quite simple and usually consists of sandwiches. However, in most food pantries you will find microwaves to heat up your own food. You will also find restaurants, food outlets, and a supermarket on campus. You can opt for both hot and cold lunches here. Of course, you can also choose to take a walk around our beautiful, green campus with your colleagues. Or you can use your lunch break to exercise in TU/e's sports center.

  • What should I wear? Is there a dress code for employees at the university?

At our diverse community there’s no strict dress code for employees. However, generally you could label it as smart casual. This means that a neat but casual appearance is appreciated but it’s also fine to wear jeans or neat sandals. There’s usually no need for formal or strictly business attire.
