Data Science

Data Science is an interdisciplinary field that uses a variety of techniques to create value based on extracting knowledge and insights from available data. The successful and responsible application of these methods highly depends on a good understanding of the application domain, taking into account ethics, business models, and human behavior.

DATA IS THE NEW GOLD

According to recent estimates, 90 percent of the data in the world today has been created in the past two years. New technologies, tools, and methods are required to make sense of this avalanche of data. The growing importance of artificial intelligence is one of the results of this trend.

Data scientists use state of the art mathematics and computer science methods such as statistics, machine learning, data mining and predictive analytics. This is combined with application domains such as humanities, ethics, operations and healthcare. This results in identifying patterns in various data sources and answering questions with an accuracy and speed that were previously not possible. As a result, data science is becoming an integral part of most types of engineering and scientific research.

Meet our key researchers

Data Science Center

Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSCE) is combining the knowledge of top scientists and students from over thirty research groups at the TU/e. Together we can tackle the most demanding scientific and societal challenges. Our mission is to stimulate the quality and quantity of Data Science research. The most interesting and promising new research happens at the interface of disciplines and is inspired by cooperation with external parties.

TU/e Data Science is a proud member of JADS (Jheronimus Academy of Data Science), a cooperation between Eindhoven University of Technology, Tilburg University, the municipality of ’s Hertogenbosch and the province Noord Brabant.

Research groups

DSCE works together with thirty research groups from six departments at the Eindhoven University of Technology. This varies from traditional mathematics and computer science groups such as Statistics, Visualization and Mining, to more application oriented groups such as Marketing, Operational planning, Security, Smart grids, Lighting etc. Data science is playing an ever more important part in many research areas.
