Data Science

Data Science is an interdisciplinary field that uses a variety of techniques to create value based on extracting knowledge and insights from available data. The successful and responsible application of these methods highly depends on a good understanding of the application domain, taking into account ethics, business models, and human behavior.

The new oil for digital economy

According to recent estimates, 90 percent of the data in the world today has been created in the past two years alone and its growth rate is only increasing. New technologies and businesses are required to make sense of this avalanche of data.

Data science uses state of the art mathematics and computer science methods such as statistics, machine learning, data mining and predictive analytics. This is combined with application domains such as humanities, ethics, operations and medicine. As a result, data scientists learn to identify patterns and regularities in huge data streams, combine various data sources and answer questions with and accuracy and speed that were previously not possible. As a result, data science is becoming an integral part of most types of engineering and scientific research.

Meet our Key Researchers

Data Science Center

The Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSC/e) is combining the knowledge of top scientists and students from over thirty research groups at the TU/e. Together we can tackle the most challenging scientific and societal challenges. Our mission is to stimulate the quality and quantity of Data Science research. The most interesting and promising new research happens at the interface of disciplines and is inspired by cooperation with external parties.

To tackle this we have a threefold strategy:
•    We act as a window to the world, to increase visibility and transparency
•    We create meeting places, where new interesting ideas are born.
•    We help define new projects & organize support in obtaining funding.

Related Research Groups

DSC/e works together with thirty research groups from six departments at the Eindhoven University of Technology. This varies from traditional mathematics and computer science groups such as Statistics, Visualization and Mining, to more application oriented groups such as Marketing, Operational planning, Security, Smart grids, Lighting etc. Data science is playing an ever more important part in many research areas.
