Course

7Y400 - Design methodology

Through the following aspects of the building design process the relation between building, construction, building services and building physics will be analyzed and organized. This integral approach leads to increased insight in the overall connection of the following aspect with the building design process;

  • Sustainable design
  • Problem definition and design for needs
  • Integral Design
  • Integrate application of renewable energy in the design process
  • Reflection; Observation of the design professional in 'practice' BNA-NLIngenieurs-TVVL workshops

Learning objectives

In practice the amount of failure cost is around 8 % of the overall turnover, which means that around 6.4 billion Euro is lost every year in the Netherlands. Not less than 40% of our energy goes to the conditioning of buildings, causing environmental problems by the resulting emissions. So there is a clear need to improve the current design process in building industry. This need is also felt by the professional organizations like BNA and NL ingenieurs. Therefore they collaborated with the TU/e in the research of Integral Design. The goal is to develop design organizational structures and design tools to improve the communication and idea generation within design teams. These design teams should use an integral approach which means that all design disciplines are working together on the design tasks right from the beginning. In this research several PhD students are involved and their latest insights from their research projects are used in this course in the following aspects:

Knowledge; identification of design phases and hierarchical levels within the design process, overview different design approaches and Integral Design

Insight; logical reproduction theory Integral Design, mark specific steps within the design process, understand the added value of methodology for structuring and communicating about the design process

Application; use the theory for a specific design task, the formulation of a program of demands, functional diagram, morphologic charts, morphological overview, selection technique Kesselring method, use of S-diagrams
Integration; generate alternatives for a design task, evaluation of arguments to make design decisions and work these out to a conceptual design
