Assistant Professor

Frederik Van Loock

RESEARCH PROFILE

Frederik Van Loock is an Assistant Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the TU Eindhoven. As a member of the section on Processing and Performance of Materials, he explores the fundamental links between the structure and properties of materials.

His research interests and expertise are in the broad field of the deformation and failure of materials, with a strong focus on polymer-based materials. Research topics include:

  • Structure-property relations of recycled and/or bio-based polymer blends, foams and composites.
  • The constitutive description of amorphous polymers, with a specific interest in the use of shear transformation zone (STZ) theory to predict and tailor their deformation response at the mesoscale.
  • Multifunctional composites such as 3D-printed EMI nanocomposite shields.

These research problems are often addressed via a combined experimental and numerical approach. There are many opportunities to collaborate or join the group. Students and researchers interested to work in this field are invited to get in touch to discuss possible MSc./PhD/postdoc or research stay opportunities.

To engineer sustainable, yet high performance materials for the 21st century and beyond, we need to address multi-physical problems across multiple length and time scales. This demands increased collaboration among researchers with diverse backgrounds in both experimental and numerical methods, spanning various fields and industries.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Frederik obtained his BSc. (2012, highest distinction) and MSc. (2014, highest distinction) degrees in Aerospace Engineering at the TU Delft (NL). His master thesis focused on structure-property relations of piezoelectric composites and was awarded with the Young Talent prize of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities. In 2015, he joined the Micromechanics Centre at the University of Cambridge (UK) as a PhD candidate, working on problems related to solid-state foaming of polymeric nanofoams and the strength of adhesive joints under the supervision of prof. Norman Fleck. After completing his PhD in 2019, Frederik conducted post-doctoral research at UC Louvain (Belgium) under the supervision of prof. Thomas Pardoen. There, he worked on a wide range of mechanics of materials-related problems, including the development of a shear transformation zone-based model to predict amorphous plasticity at the mesoscale. In 2021, he moved to the TU Eindhoven (NL) for a second post-doctorial experience on the use of 3D-printed polymer composites for absorption-based EMI shielding under the joint supervision of profs. Ruth Cardinaels and Patrick Anderson. In 2023, he joined the staff of the Processing and Properties of Materials section as an Assistant Professor.
