Battery Technology

Batteries play an indispensable role in forging a sustainable energy future, with research at TU/e addressing key aspects, including material innovation, cell and module design and integration, and the societal implications of battery technology.

More energy-dense, more efficient and more cost-effective batteries facilitate the transition of electric mobility, and enable reliable utilization of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power in the electricity grid. Widescale battery adoption is challenged by the battery’s cost, limited energy storage capacity, cycle life and (charging) efficiency. To address these challenges, research and innovations are needed in several scientific disciplines. At TU/e, this research is carried out in the departments of Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics and Industrial Engineering and Innovation Science. The research covers research on battery materials and battery systems and can be divided along the themes outlined below.
