8W270 - Fluid biomechanics

Contents

  • Governing equations (mass, momentum, energy) of 1-compement and multi-component fluids
  • Computational methods (short introduction to finite elements for fluid flows)
  • Steady boundary layer flow and mass transfer in straight, curved and tapered vessels
  • Unsteady boundary layer flow and mass transfer in straight, curved and tapered vessels

Learning objectives

Students will learn to transfer fluid dynamical process that occur in biological systems into mathematical models and use this as a basis to analyse them. In general this is mass transfer at the wall of curved and tapered tubes. During the independent learning under supervision a Finite Element based Computational Fluid Dynamics code will be used to test the theoretical approximations made in the lectures.
