RESEARCH PROFILE

Joeri Kok is a Postdoc at the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. His main research interest is the biomechanics of the scoliotic spine. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a 3D deformity of the spine affecting the quality of life of children. AIS can progress to become a life-long burden. The mechanisms underlying the initiation and progression of AIS are still unknown. Therefore, there is currently no effective treatment or cure for this disease. With the use of MRI images, Joeri develops finite element models of the scoliotic spine. These models give more insight into the pathogenesis of AIS and can provide a basis for improving treatment.
