RESEARCH PROFILE
Rob Janssen is Associate Professor in Knee Reconstruction in the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He has been involved in clinical and fundamental research since 1998, focusing on complex knee injuries, sports medicine, traumatic ligament injuries, cartilage and osteoarthritis. Janssen co-authored various national knee guidelines for doctors and physiotherapists.
Janssen has a special interest in translational research – using fundamental research results to generate meaningful health outcomes – on the topic of remodeling of human tendon autografts in anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions. His research ambition is to develop biomechanical, biological and imaging models for personalized medicine in adult and pediatric anterior cruciate ligament knee reconstructions.
Janssen also has a private practice as an orthopedic knee surgeon at Máxima Orthopedic Center, a tertiary referral center for knee ligament injuries in the Netherlands. There, he treats elite sports injuries, traumatic disorders, meniscus and cruciate ligament lesions, multi-ligament injuries, cartilage disorders and osteoarthritis of the knee. Janssen also works as knee consultant for the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB).
Combining fundamental scientific research with orthopaedic clinical practice is like eating 'Surf & Turf'. They may seem different, but translational research raises their level of excellence.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
Rob Janssen studied Medicine in France, the USA and the Netherlands. He obtained his MD degree in 1994 and then trained as an orthopedic surgeon. Since 2002, Janssen is consultant orthopedic knee surgeon at Máxima Medical Center, where he chairs the tertiary referral STZ Center of Expertise for Complex Knee Injuries and the European ESSKA PAMI Research Center for Pediatric ACL Injuries.
In 2016, Janssen obtained his PhD at Maastricht University and was appointed Director of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at Máxima Medical Center. In 2017, he studied Value Measurement in Health Care at Harvard Business School, USA. In April 2019, Janssen was appointed Professor Value-Based Health Care at Fontys University of Applied Sciences. In November 2019, Janssen joined TU/e as Associate Professor in Knee Reconstruction.
