SensUs is the yearly international student competition on sensors for health.

About us

An important aim in healthcare is to keep people healthy as long as possible and to enable people in need of care to live a high-quality life in their own environments. Healthcare is developing toward a world wherein care is delivered in a highly personalized manner, attuned to the status of the patient, based on actual, precise and reliable data. This is where biosensors play a big role. SensUs stimulates information sharing and community development for continuous innovation in biosensors. It forms a platform for open innovation and welcomes stakeholders such as healthcare organizations, patient organizations, R&D funding organizations, and companies to give input for the competition (e.g. regarding the technical goals of the competition) or otherwise support the competition.

The SensUs competition

The mission of SensUs is to stimulate the development of biosensors in a friendly competitive manner whereby students make and design innovative biosensors. Each year, a societally impactful indicator of health is chosen as objective in collaboration with different stakeholders.

The participating teams come from 14 countries and 5 different continents. Those teams consist of students from multiple scientific disciplines. Biosensing technologies are inherently multidisciplinary. To be successful, the teams need to creatively combine molecular technologies and device technologies.

The style of the competition is ‘friendly competitive’. Teams of students compete for different prizes. However, it is equally important that teams learn from each other, share information, and sow seeds for international collaboration.

SensUs Digital

In September SensUs 2019 takes place in Eindhoven. Participating student teams from all over the world come to Eindhoven to present their biosensors to the public. Professionals, companies, students, patients and general public will attend SensUs 2019 to see and experience the latest developments in the world of biosensing. SensUs wants to spread its vision and mission regarding biosensors across the globe. Therefore, SensUs Digital is being developed. During SensUs 2018 the online SensUs Digital platform attracted over 10,000 viewers from over 80 countries. This year, SensUs will be broadcasted again. On this online platform, people from all over the world can watch SensUs 2019 live and experience all the new updates in the field of biosensing. SensUs Digital will include a livestream, information about the teams and this year’s theme, live results, voting, Q&A and much more. SensUs wants to connect people worldwide and thereby exchange knowledge and experience regarding biosensors.

The High School Project

The SensUs High Schools Project: inspiring and stimulating teenagers towards innovation and biosensors.

In 2017, SensUs organized a pilot competition for high school students. Students worked in small groups on a chosen biomarker related to the SensUs 2017 theme. They developed a biosensor and presented their results and ideas during SensUs 2017.

After two successful editions, this concept will be elaborated. This year students from outside Eindhoven will participate, they will work on a new concept for a biosensor related to this year’s theme. In September, they will present their results during SensUs 2019.

SensUs wants to stimulate young, talented students towards technical projects. They can experience the process of developing new, innovative ideas in a group. SensUs reaches out to a new public and thereby raises the awareness of the importance of biosensing.

SensUs Innovation

The SensUs strategy and innovation group:

Our vision is to stimulate education and innovation in the field of biosensing. SensUs main focus has been the Student Competition and SensUs High Schools. This year, new initiatives will be developed. These new projects will strengthen us in our mission to improve healthcare for everybody all over the world.

A preview of the projects that will be part of the SensUs network:

SensUs Connect: SensUs aims to connect students and companies on a global scale (e.g. internships, jobs, projects). New collaborations open many doors for high quality innovation in biosensing and stimulate experience sharing worldwide.

SensUs Startups: We want to close the gap between prototypes and market-ready products. SensUs Startups aims to support new biosensing related startups by providing guidance and mentorship, and by facilitating knowledge-sharing.

Strategy & Innovation

This group of five full time students will be setting up new SensUs initiatives the coming year. They will be supporting biosensing startups, connecting students with companies, and helping others setting up competitions just like ours!

Chairs & Co

Chairs & Co is the group that is responsible for the general overview of the organization.

The Events subgroup is responsible for the logistics of the contest weekend in September.

External Relations

External Relations is the subgroup responsible for recruiting and maintaining relations with partners and sponsors.

Public Relations

The Public Relations department of the SensUs Organization is responsible for public relations and marketing.

The technology department is responsible the testing of the biosensors on the event in September, the Testing Event.

SensUs Organization

SensUs is organized for students by students. The organization of SensUs consists of second and third year bachelor students of different fields at the Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Each member has joined for a different goal, but all members want to contribute to the future of health. Our organization has been founded by professor Menno Prins.
