About us

What is TGD?

TGD stands for Technology for Global Development. It is a University-wide forum supported by the TU/e Board of Directors to promote awareness in the TU/e community about how its students and staff can contribute effectively to the design and implementation of innovative technological solutions for major global problems, with a special focus on the developing countries.

The inspiration for setting up TGD came from a group of students at the TU/e who were concerned about the declining interest in development issues, both in the Netherlands as a whole and at our university in particular. In 2001, an action committee was formed, which drew up a manifest entitled "Technology for Development". This manifest states that technological improvement holds out great potential for improving poor people's living and working conditions in developing countries. Technological universities are uniquely equipped to contribute to the realisation of such potential. The manifest was well received by the TU/e community. It was signed by no less than fifteen hundred students and staff members. The Board of the University then instituted TvO as a University Committee. Later TvO’s name (Technologie voor Ontwikkeling) was changed into the more international name of TGD.

The TGD Activity Committee

The TGD Activity Committee consists of a group of students from all faculties and organizes activities on the theme of technology and development throughout the academic year. These activities are open to all TU/e students and staff members and are often free of charge and always in English. To give you an idea, there is a scheme of activities organized in the past on one of the following pages. Movie nights, debates, lectures and workshops are organized regularly during the whole year, and now and then there are excursions, symposia and photo exhibitions. The committee meets regularly, to plan and organize activities. Sometimes activities are organized in cooperation with other organizations like TINT, SG and Cosmos or even with organizations such as Engineers without Borders. Also, you can find our annual photo exhibition from February until October at the Energy forum.

Our agenda can be found on our website and if you are enthusiastic please feel welcome to join us. Check out our website and FB to stay updated.

The Activity Board is run by students and is always open for new members. If you are interested, please contact us.
