AuditoriumSmarter Tech ↔ Better Teams: A Dual Imperative
Prof.dr. Josette Gevers was appointed full-time professor of Team Effectiveness and Workplace Collaboration at the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) on February 1, 2023. She will deliver her inaugural lecture on Thursday, May 16, 2024.
The title of the lecture is
Smarter Tech ↔ Better Teams: A Dual Imperative
About the lecture
Teams are the backbone of our working society. At the dawn of the 5th industrial revolution, the teamwork landscape is changing drastically. Advances in artificial intelligence have reached the point where intelligent agents, like AI and robots, are able to make goal-directed decisions autonomously. This enables them to work alongside humans, not as passive tools but as proactive teammates. Many people worry about AI and robots taking their jobs, but in a more likely scenario, they will collaborate with these intelligent agents. This partnership presents both challenges and opportunities. How can we ensure that society benefits from this collaboration while avoiding potential pitfalls associated with artificial teammates?
In this lecture, I will argue that addressing this question requires a dual imperative. Effective collaboration between humans and intelligent agents relies on smarter technology grasping the essence of teamwork. Simultaneously, the advancement of smarter technology relies on research teams mastering the art of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Meeting both requirements will pave the way for a future of teamwork that maximizes the integration of human and technological potential.
