About us

A Tuna is a group of students who enrich their lives through making music. However, to see what actually makes the Tuna unique we should look at its history, for which we need to go back to the early middle ages. In this time there are no universities, forcing students to travel the for lessons by different tutors. For their sustenance and their entertainment they make music wherever they go. Of course, they use this music to charm fair maidens as well. With the arrival of universities the need for travel disappeared, but the traditions stayed. As of today nearly every university in Spain has its own Tuna. They still wear the traditional uniforms and the songs themes are unchanged: love and student life. In tuna music typically the whole group sings while they accompany themselves with acoustic instruments, such as the laud (Spanish lute), the bandurria (like a mandolin), guitar, accordion and pandereta (a small tambourine). The Tuna tradition did not stay within the Spanish borders. Portugal and several Southern and Middle-American countries have adopted the Tuna tradition. Also in some more unlikely countries, such as the Netherlands a number of Tuna groups have been established in the Spanish image.

In order to keep our musical abilities we rehearse every Tuesday starting at 20.00. Interested in discovering the Tuna's charm? Just drop by or give us a call!
