Feeling short of breath and tired

Feeling short of breath and tired. That describes the average day of people with heart failure. Cardiologist Hareld Kemps wants to drastically improve these patients' quality of life. Hareld Kemps is a cardiologist at the Maxima MC and a recent professor at the Faculty of Industrial Design at the TU/e. He has been committed to helping people with heart failure for more than 12 years. On February 8, Hareld gave his inaugural lecture at the TU/e. “In Industrial Design, people are trained to do research and teach design. When designers think about the issues at the hospital, we get new insights. "My role is to bring people together so that innovations are implemented''

Inauguration Hareld Kemps

During the symposium Healthy Heart @ Home, Prof. Dr. Hareld Kemps presented his inaugural speech.

In his speech, he takes you into the past, present and especially the future of care for patients with chronic heart disease and, in particular, chronic heart failure. he hopes to clarify why living with heart failure can be compared to highperformance sports, but also why providing tailor-made care to these patients requires a high-performance sports approach and how technology and design will increasingly play a crucial role.

Heart failure is not an option!

Prevention of relapse and rehabilitation of heart failure is Key. At this moment, over 250,000 patients suffer from heart failure. Hospital admissions already exceed 30.000 patients per year, with average yearly costs of €25,000 per patient. An estimation for 2050 shows that 1 in 6 aged >65 will suffer from heart failure. Patients with heart failure experience daily physical and emotional distress. Everyday tasks can feel like a heavy sports exercise and may limit a patient’s ability to leave the house.

How can we tackle this problem?

Current care is not designed to meet the needs of people with heart failure. The main question of a patient is:  “How do I get through the day?’’. Today’s solutions mainly focus on medication and devices to prolong patients’ lives, while quality of life should be the objective.

The solution

We need a radical change of care.
- Monitor and treat heart failure at home: improve quality of care and reduce the burden for patients and the healthcare workforce.
- Lifestyle and rehabilitation:  get patients in an optimal physical and mental state.
- Collaboration: clinicians, researchers and MedTech companies need to work together

Innovation is strongly needed to keep healthcare accessible for all

Keeping patients with heart failure out of the hospital is the mission of Prof. Dr. Hareld Kemps. He scales up his work as a cardiologist at the Máxima MC with a professorship at TU Eindhoven.

What do benefit of top-sports and heart failure have in common? Not much, you might think at first glance. But heart failure is actually top-sport for the patient, says Hareld Kemps. The cardiologist is originally sports physician and specialized in sports cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation. 'For both groups good guidance and a multidisciplinary approach with attention to stress, nutrition and exercise is a big influence in daily life. Cardiologists are used to treating heart failure traditionally treat with medication, but by monitoring parameters in everyday life we can prevent new hospital admissions or significantly shorten it.”

Heart patient Ronald is 'in full motion' again after an experiment with a special watch

In the Netherlands, 350,000 people suffer from heart problems. By using heart watches, Máxima MC and the Catharina Hospital hope to better monitor and help their patients.

'On the move again'

One of those people is Ronald Claassen (49). He suffers from a heart rhythm disorder and has also developed heart failure in recent times. Now he is participating in the study and is wearing such a heart watch. "These are things that have really bothered me in the past period, as a result of which I could hardly do anything or nothing in life," says Ronald. Then he was offered to participate in the study. "That has brought me to where I am now: in full motion."
