FAQ

Internationals. Where can I find more information for international students?

Internationals can pose all of their questions to: io@tue.nl

Housing. Do you have any tips on how I can find accommodation?

Definitely. There are several options for arranging housing.

  • You can become a member of Facebook groups that feature many ads for houses and student rooms.
  • You can search the private sector yourself.
  • You can register at Vestide, a housing organization that can help you find a room.
  • As an international, you will receive confirmation of enrollment in May and can then indicate that you would like to be kept up to date by the housing service. A very limited number of rooms are offered through this service. As an international, you are only eligible if you return the confirmation statement on time and if the deposit (if applicable) is paid.

You can find out more on this topic via this link: https://www.tue.nl/en/education/become-a-tue-student/housing/

Admission. What criteria do you need to meet if you want to be admitted to the program?

If you have a high school certificate with Mathematics B, you are directly admissible. The program has no numerus fixus. For internationals, there are different requirements. To find out more, visit the website or contact the international office.

Admission. Do you need a certain grade for your Mathematics B and English?

You do not need a minimum grade. A certificate at the high school level is sufficient.

Admission. What about physics?

You do not need physics to be admitted to the program. However, the theory and thinking that you learn in high school physics can make some courses a little easier for you. This is especially true if you want to take certain courses at other departments in your elective space.

Admission. Can I submit my proof of English and Mathematics B after the May 1 enrollment deadline?

Yes, you can. At the time of enrollment, you do not need to have a diploma or certificate. After enrollment, you will receive all additional information and deadlines.

Admission. Where can I find more information on this topic?

The following website provides more information on the steps to follow: Admission and enrollment (tue.nl)

Admission. Is the study choice advice/study choice check binding?

The study choice advice is not binding and you may start the degree of your choice in any case, but you do need to meet the admission requirements (Mathematics B in an examination package). The study choice advice gives an estimate of your success at TU/e in the degree for which you have completed the online questionnaire. It is therefore not an absolute certainty.

Program. What does the Psychology & Technology program entail?

The Psychology & Technology program is unique because it combines a psychology degree with technical specializations. On the one hand, you learn about people: how they come to decisions, how they perceive things, how the brain works and more. On the other hand, you follow a technical track of your choice: ICT, Built Environment or Robotics. In these tracks, you learn to work and think like an engineer. This combination of psychology and technology gives you a wide range of options for a subsequent master’s degree or further career.

Program. What do the psychology and technical courses entail?

The degree consists of ‘traditional’ psychology courses, such as an introduction to psychology, brains and behavior, perception and action, social psychology and cognitive psychology. More application-oriented psychology is also covered, including in the Human Factors course. In the technical tracks, you take courses at other departments (depending on your specialization). In the second year, you work on a multidisciplinary project on a societal challenge together with students from other degrees. In addition to the compulsory components, you can take nine elective spaces (45 ECTS) in the bachelor’s program that you think fit best with your degree.

Program. What courses will I follow?

The compulsory courses deal mainly with psychology and technology. Two ITEC courses cover the ethical aspects of working as an engineer. The psychology courses give a broad overview of the psychological field. The technical specialization gives you the opportunity to possibly move on to an engineering master’s degree. You follow methodology courses to learn how to set up and conduct psychological research. In addition, you have electives that you can fill as you wish. More about the curriculum can be found in the education guide.

Program. Is there freedom to choose the courses that I like?

Yes, there is, especially in the second and third years. In the first year, you take basic courses and choose one of three technical tracks:

  • Living (Built Environment)
  • Robotics
  • ICT

You can also combine courses from different technical fields. You will then learn how to integrate and apply this knowledge in concise projects.

Program. What is the difference between PT and Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

There is a big difference between an AI degree and the P&T program. In addition to a technical track, the P&T program gives you a broad overview of the entire psychological knowledge domain (from the brain to social psychology/sociology) and teaches you how to design and conduct behavioral science research. In addition, the technical track is not limited to one specific technology (such as AI); you can also delve into data science, robotics or architecture (the built environment), for example.

Program. What is the difference between PT and studying psychology?

There is a definite overlap! You learn a lot about psychology and conducting psychological research. However, there is no focus on clinical psychology (we do not train therapists); you learn more about all facets of psychology and doing research. One big difference, of course, is the focus on technology.

Program. Do I need to be good at Mathematics B and Physics?

You can follow this degree if you achieved your high school certificate and are motivated to do this degree. If you got a 6 for Mathematics B at high school with a lot of effort, calculus could be problematic. Of course, this varies from person to person.

Program. Is Psychology & Technology a difficult program?

We think that Psychology & Technology is harder than a regular psychology program but doable if you are motivated, approach the program right from the first year and put in enough effort. It helps if you are interested in both technology and its application in society. The books and lectures are in English, but you get used to that fairly quickly.

In general, we can say that if you can keep up well at high school, you should also be able to do so at Psychology & Technology!

Program. How many hours of lectures can I expect? What is the study load?

Your week is well-filled. In the first year, you will have about 15 class hours per week, which consist of lectures and tutorials. The study load is fairly evenly distributed. Each quartile, you have three courses of equal workload. You spend about one sixth of your time (just over a day a week) working on various challenges. In the second year, you work on a specialized project in collaboration with an engineering program during that time. Homework consists of studying the material covered. After the first year, the number of hours at the university decreases and the number of self-study hours required increases.

Program. Is everything in English?

Yes, all lectures, communication and tests are in English. Most scientific/academic discussions take place in an international context – and English is the main language there. An English-language degree broadens your cultural and social knowledge. Additionally, you acquire an even better mastery of the English language. With a high school certificate, you will have the right level of English to be able to follow the degree properly.

Program. What are the options for studying abroad or an exchange program?

During the bachelor’s, there is no option for studying abroad. However, this is possible if you pursue a subsequent master’s degree at the university.

Program. How is student guidance arranged?

From the beginning to the end of your studies, experienced TU/e coaches will assist you with personal advice. This begins as early as enrollment, where – together with your coach – you look at which program suits you best and how you can best fill out your elective space. In this way, you compose your own degree that matches your interests and ambitions. And should you find out in the first year that another program suits you better, you can see together with your coach how you can change programs within this year. In addition to a personal coach, you will receive guidance from an academic advisor and from senior students. Senior students are attached as mentors to a group of about six first-year students. They will guide you through the first period of the program. These mentors are also often a point of contact later in the program. In addition, you can always contact the teachers of the program with questions. This approachability is partly due to the small scale of the program.

Program. What kind of examinations does this program have? How can I earn credits?

Eight weeks of lectures are followed by two weeks of examinations. If your course concludes with an exam, it will fall during one of these weeks. Credits are not earned during the individual examinations or reports within the course but after passing the entire course.

TU/e. Can you view the year agenda of Eindhoven University of Technology somewhere?

Yes, you can always access this via the digital education guide: Academic year agenda (tue.nl)

TU/e. How realistic is it to choose a dual degree bachelor’s program?

Each year, several students choose a bachelor’s dual degree. Generally, these students require an extra year. You then complete two bachelor’s in four years. Some students fill out their elective space with courses from another bachelor’s.

TU/e. How is the year structured at Eindhoven University of Technology?

An academic year in Eindhoven consists of four quartiles. Each quartile consists of eight lecture weeks and two examination weeks. In principle, three courses can be taken in each quartile.

TU/e. What courses and trainings does TU/e offer for students?

TU/e provides various courses and trainings for students to develop skills, such as:

  • Presentation skills
  • Study behavior
  • Career center/applications
  • Management training
  • Language courses
  • Personal development courses

Many of these skills are also incorporated into various PT courses in your bachelor’s degree, such as Professional Skills.

TU/e. Are there many activities and facilities at the university?

Yes! Besides the study association (with a bar on campus), there are more than 60 student associations in Eindhoven, all of which provide many activities on and around the campus.

The university also has a cinema, supermarket, restaurants and sports center, among other things. With a sports card from the sports center, you can do a variety of sports. Additionally, you can do just about any sport you can think of at the student sports clubs. Examples include swimming, bouldering, squash, pole fitness, rugby, hockey, budo, surfing and golf. The sports center has 38 different student sports clubs.

TU/e. In the Netherlands, what is the difference between a three-year and a four-year bachelor’s degree?

In the Netherlands, the main difference is that the three-year program is offered at universities and, upon completion, graduates receive the title of BSc ir. The four-year program is offered at universities of applied science (HBO) and, upon graduation, students are entitled to use the title of B Eng ing.

TU/e. How long does it take to get from the campus to the center of Eindhoven? What means of transport do you recommend?

From campus, you can get to the center in 10-15 minutes on foot or five minutes by bike. With a bicycle, you can access all major locations in the city quickly and easily. You can reach the train station in about 10 minutes on foot.
