INTERDISCIPLINARY CHALLENGE-BASED LEARNING (CBL) TOWARDS A BETTER WORLD

Join us for innoXchange day on Friday April 12, organised by 4TU.CEE, TU/e ALT, TU/e ESoE and TU/e innovation Space

PROGRAM

We'll start the event with a warm welcome from today's chair, Anna Wieczorek. A deep dive into the newest CBL research will be shared in the morning, at the same time a CBL course design workshop takes place, hosted by HRM Teach.

After the coffee break it's time for the keynote speaker: Johanna Lönngren shares her insights on preparing students to deal with complex sustainability challenges they will be facing in their professions. In the afternoon, there's the option to attend a round table, or you can join one of the two workshops. Join us for drinks at 3:30 PM to wrap up the day.

Deep dive on the newest CBL research

Research session hosted by Esther Ventura-Medina from ESoE.
Location: Matrix 1.345

Deep dive research on CBL -As a multifaceted approach CBL has much to offer and there is still much to learn about it. In this session we will look at the broad landscape of CBL research in the context of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary activities, extra-curricular and curricular implementations, assessment approaches and will focus particularly on aspects of knowledge development, self-regulation, assessment and transition from school to higher education. We will have opportunities to discuss issues that practitioners face and consider what research questions might be relevant in future.

CBL course design

Workshop by Helena Haest en Rik Slakhorst from HRM Teach.
Location: Matrix 1.333

Open-ended scenarios may seem unstructured, but they too have their process. This workshop is designed to clarify the process of CBL, in which open-endedness makes it often difficult for teachers to grasp how to prepare. This workshop helps you unravel the journey that both students and educators go through. Gain a deeper understanding of the phases of CBL design and uncover your next steps and the path forwards, to ultimately help your students better.

Engineering education for a better future: How can we prepare our students for dealing with complex sustainability challenges?

Keynote by Johanna Lönngren
Location: Matrix 1.345

In this keynote, Johanna Lönngren will first provide a brief overview of the basic principles and practices of education for sustainable development and what they mean for engineering education. Thereafter, she will discuss concrete tools and strategies we can use to better integrate sustainability into engineering education in order to educate responsible engineers and change agents for a better future. This lecture aims to provide you with inspiration, concrete ideas, and confidence in your own - and your colleagues' - ability to contribute to changing engineering education and preparing engineering students to deal with the urgent, complex, and wicked sustainability challenges they will be facing in their professions.

Johanna Lönngren is an Associate Professor in Science and Engineering Education and an educational developer at Umeå University, Sweden. Her research focuses on education for sustainable development, wicked problems, and emotions in engineering education. She also teaches pedagogical development courses on education for sustainable development to faculty at Umeå University. Johanna has also created a simple website with a collection of resources for teaching with wicked problems.

Implementation of a multidisciplinary CBL course for all Bachelor Students

Round table discussion with Bart van Esch and Joris Remmers
Location: Matrix 1.345

Next academic year, all second-year Bachelor students enrolled at TU/e will participate in the newly introduced Multidisciplinary CBL course. This course entails collaborative work in small, multidisciplinary teams focussing on either a design or research projects. At the moment, teachers from various departments are in the process of developing projects for this course.

In line with the principles of CBL education, these projects are open-ended and will be available to students from all departments. The aim is to form truly interdisciplinary teams where students contribute to the project with their unique expertise. However, this approach brings forth several challenges, such as the development of a uniform assessment plan, promoting collaboration between faculties and the optimal distribution of students over the projects.

In this discussion, you can share your insights and suggestions for addressing these challenges effectively, in order to offer the students the best CBL experience.

Learning in the Innovation Hub: A space for constructive confrontation on the stakes at play within global societal challenges

Session by Dominique Fürst and Chiara Treglia from TU/e innovation Space.
Location: Matrix - Light Assembly

As the landscape of engineering education evolves, the urgency to conceptualize and build a rich learning environment intensifies. It is essential to incorporate societal challenges in academic curricula with the involvement of stakeholders. Yet, it is complex to engage all parties and make them feel comfortable dealing with uncertainty.

In this workshop you gain an understanding of how to address societal challenge, while effectively integrating diverse stakeholder perspectives into the engineering curriculum.

Preparing TA's and tutors for CBL

Workshop by HRM Teach.
Location: Matrix 1.333

As a teacher in a CBL course, you do not always interact with students when they work on their challenge. For this, you rely on your tutors. They are your eyes and ears within the course, because they meet the students regularly. How can you get informed about the progress of the students within your course and support the tutors to keep the students on track?

Next to supporting students, the tutors are also learners themselves. How can you support their learning process?

During this workshop you gain insights into best practices, discuss how you can structure peer-to-peer sessions and collect knowledge from the group about coaching tutors.
