I studied at Eindhoven University of Technology - and stayed ever since! I like both teaching and doing research. My focus is always on topics related to sustainability, the environment and energy - for example energy from biomass, energy for the built environment and ecodesign of products. I am married and father of two young children. Combining work and children leaves little time and energy for hobbies. But if I get the change I go outdoors: walking, cycling, backing bread above a camp fire, trimming trees. But I also like good cooking and eating. Or just stay at the couch, watch TV and eat chocolate…
Long term development biomass gasification
Biomass gasification is a process to convert wood and agricultural residues into electricity, fuels and chemicals. Already since the oil crises of the 1970s there has been a continued interest in improving and applying the technology. However, this has not been very successful.
In this research we try to find out more about the trends and drivers in the long term development of biomass gasification (1976-now) and are interested in questions like: a) how did the technology develop; b) to what extent was this development influenced by social economical factors, like shared visions on the application of the technology; and c) to what extent was this development influenced by engineering practice, that is the technological logic and way of problem solving applied in order to improve the technological and economic performance.
