Welcome to the website of the EngD Software Technology (ST) program. ST offers a salaried two-year technological designer program on a doctorate level for MSc graduates with a degree in the field of Computer Science or a related field.

Like a PhD candidate, a EngD candidate will have the status of TU/e employee after being selected for this program. The Software Technology program is designed to prepare a trainee for an industrial career as a technological designer, and later on as a software or system architect. It starts with 14 months of advanced training and education, including 3 industry driven training projects, followed by a major design project of 10 months in a company.

The technological designer programs lead to a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (EngD) degree. These programs are given under the banner of  4TU.School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute, a joint initiative of the four universities of technology in the Netherlands. The ST program is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Eindhoven University of Technology.

About EngD Software Technology

It is an accredited and challenging two-year, Bologna Third-cycle (doctorate-level equivalent to EQF level 8) engineering degree program during which its trainees focus on strengthening their technical and non-technical competencies related to the effective and efficient design and development of software for resource-constrained software-intensive systems, such as real-time embedded or distributed systems, and for interconnected and intelligent software systems, in an industrial setting. In particular, we focus on large-scale project-based design and development of this kind of software.

The various parts of our EngD degree program aid to develop the capability of individuals to work within a professional context. It advocates a scientific research-based approach to solving problems, a systematic way of collecting evidence and a critical, reflective, and independent mind for the analysis and interpretation of evidence.

It adds an additional dimension to a full MSc program by extending it and integrating it with new elements. The emphasis is on developing and strengthening (exercising) the competencies necessary for finding technical solutions. For finding such solutions an effective collaboration with representatives of different domains is inevitable and this is practiced during the program. During our program our EngD trainees focus on systems/software architecting and designing software for software-intensive systems in multiple application domains for the High Tech Industry.

Traineeships are salaried positions. After successfully completing all requirements, trainees are awarded a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (EngD) degree.

All courses are taught in English, a Dutch language course is included.
