Master's track Materials for High Tech Systems Design

I DREAM OF AN ELEGANT HARMONY BETWEEN MATERIAL AND STRUCTURE IN EVERY DESIGN.

From a young age, I liked learning about the wonderful world of working with metal and wood. I noticed that, besides the practical skills to manufacture parts, I also needed to understand why certain designs were made the way they are. What better place to gain knowledge than at TU/e?

I am currently doing a master's program at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, where I am part of the Mechanics of Materials (MoM) research group (which will soon be part of the Materials for High Tech Systems Design track). The combination of theoretical knowledge gained during my master's program enabled me to understand problems in a fundamental way. I am now working on the design of a 1.4-metre malleable mirror for a telescope.

I chose Eindhoven because I was very aware of what was happening here in the region: engineering is central, and every day at both large companies and small startups, brilliant ideas are conceived and developed into useful machines.

During my time in Eindhoven, I had plenty of opportunities to participate in this. I was part of the TU/ecomotive student team, where we built the first car that structurally used a self-developed composite with flax as a base.

I also worked at a startup, where ideas conceived in different faculties were further developed into functional prototypes or sometimes even products. I also got a chance to get a taste of entrepreneurial life. Together with some friends, I founded a company that made hardware to automatically locate performers and actors on stages, for example, to automatically point lights or bring stereo sound to a theatre.

In short, all these opportunities and possibilities within TU/e and Eindhoven made for an unforgettable start to my career.
