Two PhD students are working to address the challenges listed above.

PhD student 1: <link en university departments electrical-engineering department staff detail ep e d ep-uid ep-tab>Robbert van der Linden, M.Sc.

Robbert focusses his work on creating dynamically reconfigurable FTTH-based passive optical networks. The networks should be configured as such that they provide users with capacity where and whenever necessary utilizing the time and wavelength domain. He defines, analyzes, designs and realizes novel concepts for routing the bandwidth to users with adaptive optical control mechanism. Novel techniques to achieve flexible but high capacity transmission are also be explored.

PhD student 2: <link en university departments electrical-engineering department staff detail ep e d ep-uid>Federico Forni, M.Sc.

Federico focusses his work on creating dynamically reconfigurable optical home area networks or Fiber-in-the-Home. The home networks use thick-core polymer or plastic optical fibers. He defines, analyzes, designs and realizes novel concepts for multi-gigabit-per-second bi-directional transmission and routing of wired/wireless signals to fixed/wireless terminals in a cost-effective way in order to optimize the overall home network performance.
