Hello, I am Tony Donné (1956) and I am part-time professor in Diagnostics of Fusion Plasmas at Eindhoven University of Technology. My main duty is being head of the Fusion Physics Division at the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research (DIFFER, Eindhoven, the Netherlands). As head of the Research Unit FOM - within the Association Euratom-FOM – I am responsible for the physics research on nuclear fusion in the Netherlands. From July – December 2010 I was acting director of the institute.

I graduated in physics at Utrecht University in 1980 (cum laude) and obtained my PhD degree at the Free University of Amsterdam in 1985 for work in the field of nuclear physics.

From that moment onwards I was employed by the FOM Institute for Plasma Physics Rijnhuizen (since January 2012 known as DIFFER), where I started to work as post-doc on the Rutherford scattering diagnostic for the TEXTOR tokamak. In 1986 I became leader of the TORTUR tokamak group and from 1988 till 1998 I headed the diagnostics division of the Rijnhuizen Tokamak Project.

In 1997 I moved to the Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany, first as head of the diagnostics group of FOM at TEXTOR and from 2004 as ‘Chef de Mission’ of the FOM-team at TEXTOR. In 2006 I became deputy head, and in 2009 head of the fusion physics department of FOM Rijnhuizen.

I have been involved for a long time in diagnostics for ITER. During the ITER Engineering Design Activity (1992 – 1998) I coordinated the European work in the field of microwave and far infrared diagnostics. In 1999 I became chair of the ITER Experts Working Group on Diagnostics and later from 2001 till July 2008 I was chair of the ITPA Topical Group on Diagnostics. From 2008 - 2010 I was chair of the Topical Group on Diagnostics residing under the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA). I was chair of the JET Diagnostic Experts Group in 2004 – 2005, that was responsible for the selection of the diagnostic systems that had to be implemented onto JET during its second Enhancement Phase (EP2). Presently I am chairing of the European Consortium for the development of the ITER LIDAR Thomson scattering system.

I established, and am presently director of, the Dutch-Russian Centre-of-Excellence on Fusion Physics and Technology, involving FOM-Rijnhuizen, the Ioffe, Kurchatov, and Triniti institutes as well as the Institute for Applied Physics.

From 2001 - 2010 I was member of the Science and Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) of EURATOM, and from 2010 - 2012 I wass member of the EFDA Steering Committee. From 2012 onwards I am vice-chair of the Consultative Committee for Fusion Energy (CCE-Fu) – the highest consultative body to EURATOM and I am also member of the Governing Board of Fusion for Energy (F4E). I acted in numerous assessment, monitoring and visitation committees.

From 2006 – 2009 I was Executive Board member of ITER-NL, a Dutch consortium consisting of four research institutes, i.e. the two Euratom Research Units FOM and NRG, the Applied Physics organisation TNO, and Eindhoven University of Technology. The aim of ITER-NL is to prepare Dutch scientists and industry for participation in ITER. Presently I am Programme Director of ITER-NL

I published about 175 papers in peer-reviewed journals and well over 300 conference proceedings
